Overview

Join the first JEDII STEM Series session of 2023 to explore practices and strategies that leaders and units can take to promote inclusion, learning and belonging when responding to complaints, conflicts and concerns from equity-deserving groups.

Connect with guests from the Office of the Ombudsperson for Students, Equity & Inclusion Office, Investigations Office, Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, and the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office to explore their experiences with disclosure and the supports that their offices can provide. This is an opportunity to learn from the experiences of other faculty and staff in academic units who have leaned into these challenging situations to create change within themselves and others.

In this session, we will discuss:

  • What are best practices to create learning and a sense of inclusion and belonging for when students, faculty and staff of equity deserving groups disclose harmful incidents?
  • What are strategies that leaders, units and individuals can take to promote growth and learning after a complaint or conflict?
  • How can departments, faculty and staff better support the work of centralized units such as the Human Rights Advising team, Investigations Office, or the Office of the Ombudsperson for Students?

Who can join

The JEDII STEM Series is open to faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students engaged in integrating Justice, Equity, Decolonization, Indigenization and Inclusion in their units.

While this series originated as a collaboration between the Faculty of Science, Applied Science and the Equity Office, people from different academic and non-academic units are welcome. Many of the guests and participants are from non-STEM fields as the topics covered are relevant to units across the university.
