Statement regarding UBC’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

Revised: Statement regarding report of anti-Black racism incident during Congress 2019

We made a mistake. On Thursday evening, we were advised by the graduate student who was subjected to anti-Black racism and racial profiling at Congress 2019 that the language used in the statement we issued had made a bad situation worse.

We apologize for this, and for the burden placed on this member of the scholarly community who invested his energy, time, experience, and knowledge to have to point this out to us. Here is the message we should have written in the first place.

On June 2, the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences was informed that a student attending Congress 2019 had been subjected to anti-Black racism, racial profiling, and harassment by two other Congress participants. UBC is the host venue for Congress 2019.

UBC unequivocally opposes and denounces anti-Black racism, racial profiling, harassment and discrimination of any kind. Anti-Black racism and racial profiling in this instance, and more broadly, is deeply concerning to the University, not only for its impact on this valued guest and scholar but also for its impact on on all racialized people who are so frequently subjected to emotional and physical violence, surveillance, and policing.

While UBC Human Resources is supporting the Federation in its investigation of this incident, the Equity & Inclusion office will be reaching out to the graduate student to offer support and resources.

More must be done to call out and eliminate anti-Black racism and discrimination, and to disrupt systemic patterns of discrimination. We are vested in leading and supporting efforts to build more welcoming, inclusive, and respectful campuses and communities.

We are committed to ensuring that equity and inclusion are embedded in all areas of academic, work and campus life, and that the dignity of all community members is respected.

We stand firmly against all forms of racial discrimination and harassment as we strive to provide an inclusive experience for students, faculty, staff and visitors. Institutionally and individually, we all share in the responsibility of creating and maintaining that environment.

Statement regarding report of anti-Black racism incident during Congress 2019

Please see our revised statement.

The Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences received a complaint on June 2 from a student attending Congress 2019, for which UBC is the host venue. The student reported being racially profiled and harassed by another Congress participant.

UBC unequivocally opposes and denounces anti-Black racism, racial profiling, harassment and discrimination of any kind. This allegation of anti-Black racism and racial profiling is deeply concerning to the University, not only for its impact on a valued guest but also for its impact on racialized people at our campuses who deserve to experience a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment.

UBC Human Resources is supporting the Federation in its investigation of this incident. UBC will continue to assist in whatever way we can.

$95,000 awarded to community-led equity, diversity, and inclusion projects

Ten projects led by faculty, staff, and students at UBC Vancouver were awarded funding from the Equity Enhancement Fund. Projects support the activation of UBC’s strategic plan and the university’s commitment to inclusion.

As part of this year’s funding call, the Equity & Inclusion Office at UBC Vancouver received 40 applications for a total of $408,000 in requested funding – a slight increase over the amount requested the previous funding cycle.

An evaluation committee, convened by the Equity & Inclusion Office, assessed each of the applications.

Projects funded this year all seek to enhance equity and inclusion across the university, including in admissions, academic programs, student services and experiences – and across thematic areas such as Indigeneity, accessibility, race and culture, and LGBTQ2SIA+.

In addition to the above funding, three projects were awarded discretionary funding from EIO to address their requests from nominal funding in support of community engagement activities, such as conferences.

“It’s always inspiring to see the creativity and innovation that emerges from our campus community. This fund makes is possible to bring to life ideas and address the needs from the community and in alignment with the university’s priorities,” says Sara-Jane Finlay, Associate Vice-President, Equity & Inclusion.

$15,000 is also allocated to support projects at UBC Okanagan, with five projects selected for funding this year.

Application cycle for the Equity Enhancement Fund opens in January of each year. The fund is open to all students, staff, and faculty.

The fund supports initiatives that help advance UBC’s strategic commitment to inclusion, facilitate collaboration and innovation, and build a diverse campus culture.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Congress 2019

This year, UBC is hosting the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, an annual convergence of over 70 scholarly associations – and there’s no shortage of amazing sessions covering equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) topics.

Thanks to our colleagues at the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology who compiled the following list of EDI related events taking place during Congress.

Of course, we’re biased to highlight these three events that we’ve helped support directly.
