Lucy manages implementation structures and processes to advance UBC’s Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism (StEAR) Framework and Roadmap for Change and provides leadership on project management in the EIO. Lucy holds a Master’s in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She brings over ten years of experience working to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in both the non-profit and postsecondary sectors through strategic planning, project management, research and analysis, and evaluation. Outside of work, Lucy enjoys being active in the outdoors.

Human Rights Advisor

Bio
Nicole Gareau-Wilson, M.Ed (she/her) is a Human Rights Advisor with UBC’s Equity & Inclusion Office. She advises UBC Vancouver and Okanagan students, faculty and staff who may have questions about UBC’s SC7: Discrimination policy. During the 2023-24 academic year, Nicole served as the co-chair of UBC’s inaugural Accessibility Committee, which assists UBC in identifying, removing and preventing barriers for disabled community members under the Accessible BC Act (2021).
Nicole has lived in the subarctic on Treaty 5 land, on the prairies on Treaty 1 land, and is learning about the unceded ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations as an uninvited guest in Vancouver. Nicole earned a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education, and a Master’s degree in Education, focused on equity in education for historically, persistently, and systemically marginalized (HPSM) groups. She has a deep passion for human rights, and for supporting planning and programming that removes systemic barriers for HSPM groups.
Nicole has sound knowledge of federal and provincial human rights and accessibility legislation relevant to equity and inclusion. She was a Policy Analyst with the Province of Manitoba’s Accessibility Office, where guided by Manitoba’s Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Manitobans Act (2013), she trained Crown Corporations, government departments, regional health authorities, municipalities, and universities on accessibility planning and implementation. Prior to this work, Nicole was an elementary school teacher, and an Academic Advisor at the University of Manitoba.

Human Rights Advisor
Elisabeth provides impartial human rights advice and information to all members of the UBC community.
Prior to joining the EIO, Elisabeth was a litigator in private practice, having practised primarily in the area of workers’ rights. Elisabeth has knowledge and experience with the human rights landscape both in Canada and abroad, and brings compassion and practicality to her work. She obtained her JD. from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC, and her Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) from the University of Ottawa.
Elisabeth also has a strong interest in health and is currently the Workplace Wellbeing Ambassador for the EIO.

Strategist, Institutional Initiatives
Louise is passionate about exploring UBC’s institutional systems, and developing and implementing plans to make them more equitable and inclusive. She conducted the 2019 Employment Systems Review, and facilitated the campus-wide engagement and development of the Inclusion Action Plan, the Employment Equity Plan, and the Canada Research Chair (CRC) Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Plan.
Louise supports the implementation of these plans through facilitation of the Inclusion Action Leads Community of Practice, and the CRC Working Group and Implementation Team. She also engages in other research and pilot projects to explore and demonstrate possibilities for more equitable systems, such as the BC Office of the Human Rights Commissioner’s Special Programs.

Bio
Hélène provides leadership for EIO operations and services, including supporting strategic planning and change management efforts for the office and UBC, promoting effective people development and coaching practices, and overseeing strategic communications functions. A long-time staff member at the EIO, Hélène builds EDI principles and practices into their vision of operational excellence.
Hélène also partners and collaborates with senior management and key stakeholders across UBC to advance transformative strategies, policies, and practices for systems change, and represents the AVPEI and the EIO in meetings with campus and community groups.
They hold a PhD in Sociology from UBC.

Arriving to UBC in 2009, Theresa has provided senior administrative support to various departments, including Finance, Facilities, Information Technology (IT), and HR. with her most recent appointment as the Administrative Manager, UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI) and Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS).
In the Administration Manager role, Theresa is responsible for providing confidential executive administrative and operation support to the Associate Vice-President (AVP), and works closely with senior members of the Equity & Inclusion Office (EIO).

Communications Manager
Bio
Marko is responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies that engage the campus community in activities of the Equity & Inclusion Office and help advance and demonstrate UBC’s commitment to excellence, diversity, and inclusion. A UBC alumnus, Marko brings experience of working in higher education, research, local and federal government, consulting, and non-profit settings. Prior to joining the Equity & Inclusion Office, Marko managed communication and engagement efforts with the UBC Sustainability Initiative. As part of his undergraduate and graduate degrees, Marko studied international conflict, human security, good governance and geo-politics. He completed a certificate in public participation from the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) and continues to pursue professional development related to communications, public relations, and management.

Bio
Sahir supports the development of projects expanding the use of EDI data to support insitutional initiatives as a member of both the Equity & Inclusion Office (EIO) and the Planning and Institutional Research Office (PAIR). Sahir completed his Bachelor of Science (Hons) in biochemistry at the University of British Columbia with his thesis on central nervous system regeneration after injury. Following this Sahir completed his Masters of Data Science at the University of British Columbia. Sahir has also worked extensively with youth to develop their understanding of complex sociopolitical topics as well as giving talks and workshops to law enforcement and schools on racioethnic sensitivity.
