Purpose
The purpose of the Accessibility Planning Team (“Team”) is to develop and implement an institutional accessibility plan for the identification, removal and prevention of barriers for campus community members with disabilities, incorporating principles of inclusion, adaptability, diversity, collaboration, self-determination, and universal design.
Mandate
The mandate of the Team is to:
- Seek advice from the Accessibility Committee on the identification, removal, and prevention of barriers for persons with disabilities;
- Seek guidance and expertise from any working groups or special subcommittee tasked with undertaking research or gathering information on any relevant topic;
- Seek feedback from the campus community as appropriate;
- Contribute to the development and drive implementation of the Accessibility Action Plan;
- Advise on the development of tools and mechanism to track progress on implementation;
- Advise on the preparation of compliance reports;
- Submit compliance reports to and maintain liaison with the BC Accessibility Directorate.
Membership
This Team comprises university officers who have oversight of compliance with human rights and accessibility legislation as well as oversight of portfolios where resources will need to be deployed to plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to meet BC Accessibility Act requirements that could include standards related to employment, delivery of services, the built environment, information and communications, transportation, health, education, and procurement (buying services).
University offices may request a delegate join the Team in their stead or alongside them.

Partners
The co-chairs of the Accessibility Committee (AC) will attend meetings to enhance information sharing between the APT and the AC.
The EIO’s Accessibility Strategist and other members of the EIO’s Accessibility Compliance Coordinating Team will attend meetings to enhance planning, implementation, and evaluation activities.
The Team may invite standing resource persons from key offices who have required subject matter expertise to support the mandate of the group, including planning, implementation, evaluation, and compliance reporting requirements.
The Team may establish working groups, that draw from additional campus experts as needed, tasked with supporting elements of planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Accountability
The AVP, Equity & Inclusion, who is the chair of the APT, will report to the UBC Executive working with and through the following Executive Sponsors: Provost & Vice-President, Academic (Vancouver), Vice-President Human Resources, Vice-President Students, and Vice-President, Finance & Operations.
Operation
The Accessibility Planning Team will meet virtually at least once in the fall, winter, and spring terms, or as necessary, for a duration of one hour. The Terms of Reference and necessary governance structures and mechanisms required to sustain ongoing work to maintain compliance will be reviewed in 2026.
