Accessibility Planning Team

Purpose

UBC’s Accessibility Planning Team (APT) develops and implements university’s institutional accessibility plan for the identification, removal and prevention of barriers for campus community members with disabilities. The APT’s approach incorporates principles of inclusion, adaptability, diversity, collaboration, self-determination and universal design.

Mandate

The mandate of the team is to:

  • seek advice from the Accessibility Committee on the identification, removal, and prevention of barriers for persons with disabilities
  • seek guidance and expertise from any working groups or special subcommittees tasked with undertaking research or gathering information on any relevant topic
  • seek feedback from the campus community as appropriate
  • drive the implementation of the accessibility plan
  • develop tools and mechanism to track progress on implementation
  • prepare compliance reports for Accessibility Committee review and executive approval
  • submit compliance reports to and maintain liaison with the BC Accessibility Directorate

Membership

The APT comprises university officers who have oversight of compliance with human rights and accessibility legislation, as well as oversight of portfolios where resources will need to be deployed to plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to meet British Columbia’s Accessibility Act requirements. These could include standards related to employment, delivery of services, the built environment, information and communications, transportation, health, education, and procurement (buying services).

The APT will invite standing resource persons from key offices who have required subject matter expertise to support the mandate of the group, including planning, implementation, evaluation, and compliance reporting requirements.

The team may establish working groups, that draw from additional campus experts as needed, tasked with supporting elements of planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Accountability

The APT – via the AVP, Equity & Inclusion who chairs the Team – reports to the UBC executive through the following executive sponsors:
