Equity Facilitator, Race & Cultural Competencies

William comes to UBC with 23 years of teaching and administrative experience in ethnic studies, equity, and Inclusive Excellence program building at three public research universities in the western US. With the University of Colorado system, he oversaw the collaborative development and implementation of a five-year campus diversity strategic plan, managed faculty-student mentorship programming, and helped to integrate three AAC&U High Impact Practices with a focus on racialized, Indigenous, and first-generation student-faculty engagement. His lifelong commitment to educational access and equity in advancing the principles of democracy was forged by his family’s internment in British Columbia and deportation from Canada with 4,000 other Japanese Canadians following the Second World War.
