Twenty-seven years ago, on December 6, 1989, Canadians were shocked by a mass shooting at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal. On that day, fourteen women, most engineering students, were killed while on campus. The shooter walked into their classrooms, told the men to leave, stated that he hated feminists, and began his rampage. The shooting only stopped when he killed himself.
In response to this national tragedy, the Canadian government established December 6th as the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women. As members of the UBC community, this day is a time to remember and honour the women who were murdered. It provides an opportunity to reflect upon the difficult and painful realities of gender-based violence on university campuses and beyond.
Violence against women is an ongoing reality, exacerbated by sexism, poverty, racial discrimination, colonialism, and many other contributing social factors. Members of the UBC community must engage with the issue of violence against women, and consider the myriad ways in which it occurs.
UBC Remembers December 6th is organized by a small group of student and staff collaborators from the Equity & Inclusion Office, UBC Engineering Undergraduate Society, Women in Engineering, the Sexual Assault Support Centre (SASC), Alpha Omega Epsilon, Sigma Phi Delta, and the Faculty of Applied Science.
Please join us for the following series of events being held between November 21 and December 6 on campus. We encourage you to take part, to Remember, and to Reflect.
